Singl New Life byl vydán 13.6.1981

New Life znamenal hitparádový průlom pro kapelu, a tak skupina dostala prostor v TV vysílání pořadu Top of The Pops.. New Life se vyšplhal na 11.příčku britské Top 20.

Opět se nahrávalo v Blackwing Studios.

Obal singlu evokuje motiv španělského surrealisty Salvatora Dalí, “Geopolitické dítě sleduje zrození nového člověka.”, byl dílem mladšího bratra Vince Clarkea Rodneyho, tehdy studenta umění.

Zajímavosti:

Během nahrávání měla kapela problém se čtyřhlasovou vokální harmonií, tedy problém měl především vyložený nezpěvák Andrew Fletcher, na jehož účet se díky tomu zbylá trojice výborně bavila.

Druhá strana singlu, skladba Shout! se stala prvním prodlouženým 12" remixem kapely vůbec.

Samotná kapela nerozuměla textu skladby, Dave Gahan k tomu řekl: "Jednou večer sem se procházel Basildonem a šly za mnou dvě holky, poznali mně a začali pištět: "I stand still stepping on a shady street",  rychle jsem přidal do kroku a obrátil límec a pak se ještě více rozpištěly "And I watch that man to a stranger", v tu chvíli mne napadlo: "To snad ne, ony tomu textu snad rozumějí?? No ale my vůbec ne!"
